NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament: ND ousts UNC

What? The North Carolina Tar Heels are out? In one of the most amazing upsets in history the team that is always in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is out, taken down by Notre Dame.

Saturday’s game was historic all right. Notre Dame had never won a conference championship before and no one was expecting them to win against North Carolina. But they did.

To be truthful, this year Notre Dame is the better team. Ranked 11th to North Carolina’s 19, the rankings alone told us who should win. But we’ve seen too many price per head sportsbook odds leaning towards the Tar Heels.

The game was starting to go the Tar Heels way in the second half when they were up 64-56. With 9:21 remaining the Irish took control of the ball. North Carolina on turned the ball around 6 times after that, leading to their demise.

“Just, I am a little bit in awe of what my team did tonight,” Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said, “and really the whole weekend here.”

“It’s as big as any we’ve had,” he said.

The Irish will be a force to be reckoned with in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament when their chance of making it all the way to the final four will be a possibility, one that was only a dream before.

The Fighting Irish must really have fight in them this year because they took down #2 Duke the day before.

After their win over Duke Friday, Bey was reminiscent of their previous attempts to get to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

“It’s a special night really in the history of our program …” Brey said. “One of the things I used to say all the time when we were in the Big East, let’s get to Saturday. We went to four straight semifinals before we left the league for the ACC, but we could never get to Saturday. Darn if we’re not playing for it (Saturday) night, and I’ve never been more confident of a group.”
