The UFC ‘s light heavy weight champion known as Jon “Bones” Jones is facing felony charges on a hit-and-run that he was allegedly involved in Sunday morning in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
A spokesperson for the Albuquerque Police Department named Tanner Tixier made a statement to ESPN.com that the person injured in the accident is a 25 year old pregnant woman. Jones was first facing misdemeanor charges before it came to light that the women suffered a broken arm in the accident.
“The preliminary statement that the woman suffered ‘non-serious’ injury was not entirely accurate,” Tixier stated. “She did suffer a broken arm. That is confirmed.”
Albuquerque Police are still waiting for Jones to turn himself into custody. Jon Jones will be charged with leaving the scene of a crime, a felony charge that potentially carries jail time, this according to Tanner Tixier.
According to witnesses on the scene they saw a man the fit Jones description leave the scene fleeing from silver SUV after he struck the women. He stopped then returned, grabbed a boat load of money stuff it in pocket and leave again. The vehicle was identified as a rental of Jones. There was a marijuana pipe with marijuana inside that was found inside the car. No other drugs were found.
Officers have tried o contact Jones at his address but have been unsuccessful. Jones had moved out to Albuquerque the base of his long time gym, Jackson-Winkeljohn MMA.
An Albuquerque PD spokesman Simon Drobick stated that Jones would be facing a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge and would be liable for damages to the vehicles and the medical costs of the injured women.
Jon Jones who is 21-1 is scheduled to go up against Anthony Johnson at FC 187 on May 23 in Las Vegas. UFC has not announced change on the card. Johnson’s representatives have not been notified of a change either.
In May of 2012, Jones was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after he crashed up his Bentley into a telephone pole in Binghamton, New York.
Bookmaking solutions has that match at Jones -280 and Johnson +240. And it seems that the Jones line is going even higher. I would have to take the Jones side in this match as I believe he just has too much pedigree for Johnson, But that’s why we play the game.
