The Dallas Cowboys have reached an agreement with undrafted free agent offensive lineman La’el Collins, the team stated Thursday. The Dallas Cowboys have fully guaranteed a three-year, $1.65 million deal. A sauce told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
As of now Sportsbook Software and Bookmaker Software have the Dallas Cowboys at 14/1 but has been gaining momentum with a good draft and solid decision making. This signing can help or hurt but the Cowboys decided to make that calculated step.
The Cowboys met with the troubled lineman Wednesday night at Jerry Jones’ Highland Park home and where able to come away with the agreement. Collins will receive a signing bonus of $21,000. He was viewed as a first round pick entering the draft last week but went undrafted when he was linked to a murder of his pregnant former girlfriend.
Collins was questioned about the death to Brittney Mills’ by Baton Rouge, Louisiana investigators. He is not a suspect and has been fully cleared. Collins was one of the better linemen in college football but nobody pulled the trigger on him due to the uncertainty of his involvement.
There was a paternity test to show that Collins was not the father of Mills’ child. Collins also passed a polygraph test and according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson. Mills’ child survived the shooting but died a week later after being born in the hospital. Teams are not allowed to meet with undrafted players at their school or residence that is the reason for meeting with cowboys in Dallas. Collins also met with Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan.
It is not clear yet if Collins will take part in the Cowboys’ rookie minicamp which will start on Friday. Collins started the last two year at LSU at left tackle but he projects more as guard. Already strength of the Cowboys’, offensive line Collins will be one more piece to an impressive group. They include first rounder Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick and Zack Martin as well as competent right tackle Doug Free.
Collins will be the third high profile addition that the Cowboys have signed at less than full price. Cowboys signed Greg Hardy to a one year deal in free-agency… He was signed to a good deal in part to his domestic violence issues. He has received ten game suspensions from the NFL. which he is appealing. Last week the Dallas Cowboys also drafted Randy Gregory in the second round. He also was pegged as a first rounder. Dallas is doing all they can to become a legit title contender and these moves how exactly that.
