The Cavaliers impressed fans and online bookmakers by winning 11 games in a row – a best in the NBA – and LeBron James said that he’s willing to do anything necessary for them to continue being successful, even if he has to leave the bench and play again.
“It’s all about the team and for me being the leader of the team, it doesn’t matter. Whatever this team needs in order for us to win, I’ll come off the bench. I’m serious. I’ll come off the bench,” said the player. “If it helps our team, that’s what it’s about, man.
“It’s about a team and how we all fit together, how the five guys on the court fit together, how the eight guys or 10 guys on the bench all help the guys that are on the floor and so on and so on. So, sacrifice is the biggest word in team sports, but it’s not about saying it. It’s about doing it, as well. It’s about living it.”
The veteran’s offer to play was obviously symbolic. The Cavaliers star was demonstrating how much he’s willing to do for the team to advance in the standings of the Eastern Conference. James started in 881 out of his 882 games played in the NBA. The player only left the bench once, on the 11th of December of 2007, in a win against the Pacers at home, making his return to the team’s lineup after not featuring in five games in a row when he suffered a sprain on the index finger of his left hand.
Also, Cavaliers coach David Blatt wouldn’t even consider the idea of James not being a part of the five starting players.
“No. No. Nope,” said Blatt. “He’s doing fine as he is. He’s doing quite fine.”
However, Blatt was thankful for what was said by James.
“LeBron is a champion and he’s not only a great player, but he’s a great teammate and he wants his guys, his teammates, to do well and he wants the team to do well,” Blatt said. “And that’s a big positive; it’s a really big positive.”
These days, Love’s offensive play is the only setback that the Cavaliers seem to have. The player recorded an average of only 13.9 points on a shooting percentage of 37.2 in 10 meetings during the team’s winning streak, and online bookmakers hope that he gets his act together.
The coach played down Love’s problems on the court.
“I think Kevin is very much in the flow of the game and is playing both ends of the court,” Blatt said. “The last thing I really worry about with Kevin Love is if he is going to score. That’s the last thing that concerns me. He’s a proven scorer in this league and a proven high-level scorer. And he’s helping the team win. He’s playing to win, and that’s really what both concerns me and what impresses me about him, is he’s been willing to do whatever it takes to help us win, and that’s what we want.”
