NFL- New England Patriots

The New England Patriots made several roster moves last week, including the release of veteran defensive end Ty Warren and the acquisitions of wide receiver Chad Ochocinco and defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth.

The Washington Redskins traded Haynesworth to the Patriots for a 2013 fifth-round draft pick, and his base salary for the upcoming season is $5 million. Haynesworth played only 20 games with the Redskins, recording 6½ sacks.

Last year, Haynesworth missed offseason workouts because he wanted to avoid playing in Coach Mike Shanahan's 3-4 defensive schemes. He didn't practice until he passed the conditioning test on the 10th day of training camp.

The 30-year-old defensive lineman was at his best when playing in the 4-3 scheme with the Tennessee Titans, and seemed to prefer that over the Redskins' 3-4.

For their part, the Patriots are hoping Pro-Bowler Haynesworth will help a defensive line that since 2008 has registered 50 sacks, something that bookmakers should consider.

Haynesworth alone had 15 sacks in 34 games in that three-year span and his 30.5 sacks in his 10-year career are the seventh most among active defensive tackles. However, only one of those sacks came with just three defenders on the line.

In many ways, the 3-4 alignment was Haynesworth's downfall in the Redskins, so it will be interesting see how he adapts to the Patriots, as they used a 3-4 on 40.1 percent of defensive snaps in 2011, just the 11th most in the NFL. The Redskins used that scheme on 50.6 percent of snaps, fifth most in the NFL.

Finally, it seems there something about 30-year-olds that the New England Patriots like. Some notable their transactions in recent years involved players who were 30.

In 2004, the Patriots traded for running back Corey Dillon, who turned 30 during the season. In 2007, New England signed 30-year-old linebacker Adalius Thomas and traded for 30-year-old wide receiver Randy Moss.
